COVID-19: It’s not all bad….

posted in: General 1

I’m sure you think I have lost my mind but believe me, I am just as anxious to jump off this “coronacoaster” as the rest of you.

It’s no secret that this pandemic has been devastating to the whole globe, everyone has been affected in some way or another, whether it has been from the tragedy of a life lost, or if you have suffered financially during this time, perhaps you have been retrenched or have had your salary or hours slashed – we have ALL been affected.

Nothing is simple any longer.

If you are a smoker you are looking down the barrel of the illegal cigarette trade of which you have now become very familiar with and which is attached to an exorbitant rate for a single box just so you may have a drag with your morning coffee.

No longer can you on the “spur of the moment” make the decision that you would like a glass of chardonnay with your Saturday brunch…. unless of course, you remembered to stop and stand in a ridiculously long cue at your local bottle store on a Thursday before all liquor sales close until the following Monday!

Of course, not even this is possible now with the alcohol ban back in play…

Understandable our anxiety levels are off the charts, trying to keep our family safe, our companies afloat and of course to try and remember our masks every time we leave the house… I myself have had the pleasure of turning myself right around, right outside our local grocer several times now to head back home and retrieve a mask from my ever-growing collection.

But… it’s not all bad

And let me tell you why!

Mother Nature has just received a well-deserved break!!!

And it seems fitting that it was World Environment Day on the 5th June which was during out lockdown, this is a day we celebrate “her” and all that she does for us.

The worldwide lockdown has brought about significant reductions in emissions of smoke and waste due to oil consumption, not to mention a reduction in litter. This in its self has had a positive effect as we have recently seen wildlife roaming, trotting and swimming about freely 🙂

I hope that these pictures warm the cockles of your heart as they did mine and remind you that we are not alone on this earth, not everything is about us and life is still beautiful!

Amazing right!

Animals are not the only beneficiaries of this terrible pandemic, we have seen lockdown camps across the country; feeding, clothing and homing our most vulnerable, this has led to many social and economic issues being brought to the forefront like drug addiction which is now being dealt with, with mostly compassion and understanding. There have been countless private entities who have come together to collect and distribute food, clothes, blankets etc. and it’s lovely to see the humanity or as we like to refer to it as “Ubuntu” amongst our South Africans!

I’m not blind to the corruption that these social funds have unfortunately been subjected to, however, I still sleep a little better knowing our poor and homeless have been feed and have had a bed at night.

So while the world is striving to be COVID-19 Negative….. today I am feeling COVID-19 positive!

Keep well, stay safe and we WILL get through this together!

5 Ways to Stay Motivated at Work

So let me paint the picture: you’re into the final weeks of your work year, Christmas posters are going up, the days are getting warmer, your Christmas tree is threatening to make an appearance, and you pretty sure you have caught yourself humming a carol or two already. Now if you are anything like me all this excites you very very much! I LOVE the Holidays!

There’s just one minor problem, there is still 3 or 4 weeks of work to go. So how am I going to stay focused and motivated?

Well, this is what I’m going to try and my 5 tips to you.

  1. Reflect

“So what do you mean Sher?”

What I mean is, surely you had some goals or aspirations coming into this year? Perhaps you reached them? So congratulate yourself! Be proud of the things you achieved this year.

On the other hand, maybe you didn’t reach them? Perhaps you are still an overweight smoker who curses too much and still spends way too much time on social media?

Well, it’s not too late… and that brings me to point number 2.

  1. Make a to-do-list

Decide how many days you still have to accomplish a few of these goals you have left for this year, and maybe make the goal now, just to start these things, no one is expecting you to perform miracles and lose, say 10kgs in 30 days, but maybe just start eating a little healthier, go to the gym or simply just start drinking more water.

Maybe you had planned to spend more time with your kids this year and less time taking quizzes on Facebook to find out what kitchen appliance you are?

Well then, firstly stop doing that immediately! Set out 15 minutes a day and just have a chat with them, read to them or whatever. You know what your kids need, and what they would appreciate, and of course, this could go for a partner, family member or even friend. I promise this one will make you feel way better about yourself like no kitchen appliance ever could.

  1. Take time out

Now, this is important, so listen.

Take your tea time. Take your lunch time. Take a walk. Take a nap.

Listen to your body. We all know this year like all years has been a long one and yet it has gone by so fast. We also know work doesn’t slow down because you have taken a sick day perhaps, or tragedy hit your family, so now you a little behind on a project or deadline? Well, you are no good to yourself if you are tired and miserable. So look after yourself first, then take a deep breath pumpkin, and make that to-do-list I just spoke about!

  1. Get excited!!

If you are anything like me, finishing something gives you a huge sense of accomplishment. So once you have reflected, and made your list of things that need to be done – Get Them Done! And feel the excitement of clearing your list, nearing the end with a clean slate and what next year may bring. This is the end of a decade people! Let that sink in!! Next year is a whole new beginning, and I for one cannot wait to start a new work year (after a ton of sun and a little gin of course), set new goals, break new boundaries and achieve, achieve, achieve!

Now, this next one is not really something you can do for yourself to stay motivated, but rather a little advice to help keep the people around you less motivated to want to kill you in the work place.

  1. Work Consideration

I’m not sure what it is about us humans, but we always seem to think our load is heavier, our hardship is more severe and we are more tired or broke than the next.

Yes, you know what I mean. Well, quit it! We are all tired, we all have daily struggles and most importantly we are all in this together so be kind, smile at each other, complement each other and just be less annoying. Try crunching, slurp, pen click and foot-tapping less at your desks. Keep your eye on the prize.

We are almost there, let’s get stuff done and be awesome doing it!

And on that note, I would like to wish you all a wonderful end of the year and holiday to follow, enjoy the parties, the family, the trips, trees, prezzies and carols and stay safe!

See you next decade!

Did You Know #DYK – A Walk Through Your Advisory Setting

A Walk Through Your Advisory Setting

Welcome to the 1st edition of a new supplement we are adding to our weekly Blog called “Did You Know”.

We will use this insert to either teach you something new or refresh your memory on something old, but still interesting to know ;).

Today I’m going to give you the ins and outs and lowdowns of your Daily Advisories….. and right now I’m hoping you are not squinting your eyes and asking “What is a Daily Advisory?” lol! but just in case you are….. Lets start from the beginning 😉

Simply put, your Daily advisory is all the leads we send you on a daily bases, according to the filters YOU selected.

So, Did You Know – you can adjust your Daily Advisory whenever you like? well, you can and this is how!

Once logged in – Hover your cursor over your Name, this will bring up a drop down menu as illustrated in the below diagram.

Select Advisory Setting and let us begin:)

There are 7 Consecutive Steps you need to follow.

Step 1 – Email Set Up:

This is the email you have indicated to us as the one you want to receive all Advisories on.  The Tick indicates that this email address has been verified, If you did not receive a verification email or if it got lost – you may click on the Action tab and resend the verification email to yourself.

Below that is a list of the advisories you are paying for – you may De-select any of these if you like (This will not alter your current monthly rate)

So why would you want to deselect an advisory? well for instance, if you are subscribed to Private Projects, we give you Daily Tenders for free, however you may decide you are not interested in receiving Government Tenders…. then you would just simply remove the tick next to Industry Advisory 🙂

Step 2 – Categories:

This is where you decide exactly what leads you are wanting to receive.

First lets go though the Tender Categories – you may select as many or as few of these as you like.

*Please be advised that if you opted out of receiving an Industry Advisory in the previous step, you should not have anything selected here.

Project Categories: Often large developments have both a building and infrastructure element and because both of these elements may not interest you, we have given you the power to choose whether you would like to receive updates on both or just one.

Project Status: These are the various stages in which a Project moves through from Conceptual right up until Completion.

Once again, we don’t see why you should receive information that is irrelevant to what you do, so here you get to decide what stages of the Project you would like to receive.

* Please be advised that the last two options will not be available to you, unless you are a Private Projects Subscriber.

OK so lets move on.

Step 3 – Values:

If you have a CIDB Grading you can be quite specific here, however if you are, for example, a Consultant and don’t require a CIDB, you should still select all, as there will be instances where a tender is Turnkey and there may be a CIDB requirement for the contractor all on the same tender.

Just for interest sake I have listed below the industries that may apply for a CIDB grading 🙂

The Project Values refer to the size of the Development, here you may decide which size Projects would be of interest to you .

Step 4 – Industries

Now this is two fold, firstly if you have Tender Categories selected, here you get to be specific about the industries you service.

For instance: If your company was in the security sector and really only supplied and installed security solutions to the Hospitality & Leisure as well as the retail sector, then this is what your advisory would look like:

* Please note that without an industry selected, your selected Category will be deemed null and void.

OK so that covers the use of industries for your Government Tenders, now to explain them in Projects.

Now remember, you would have already selected whether you are interested in the Building or Infrastructure Projects in Step 2 – Categories

So now lets say you selected only Building, you can now use the industries selections to tell us in what industry you would like to receive Building Projects ….. are you still with me?

You would not select anything pertaining to Infrastructure, for example Roads or Water.

Step 5 – Regions:

Regions are subscription dependent, meaning the following:

Daily Tender SA – You may Select as many regions under the South Africa selection.

Daily Tender Africa – You may select any of the Non South African Regions.

Daily Tender SA +Africa – You may select from all the regions available.

Private Projects – You may select from all the regions.

Step 6 – Keywords

This is your fail safe step, this ensures you miss nothing!

First search for your keyword, then Select the keyword and by using the action tab, click on the add Keyword drop down.

And just like that you have added your first keyword.

You can select multiple words and add them to save time:) – You may select up to 80 Keywords.

And here we are at our final step…

Step 7 – Custom

These options are self explanatory, however I do want to clarify the following:

  1. By ticking this option, we will still send you an advisory even if there is a day whereby your filters don’t match anything we have updated or published for that day. If this option is ticked and you DON’T receive an advisory on a particular day – give us a call so we may see what the issue was.

5,6,7. You may select one of these in order to receive a breakdown of all your monitored Projects

8.  Automatic Monitoring saves you from having to go through Projects and having to monitor them yourself. By selecting this option, the system will automatically monitor all Projects published that match your filters.

Once you have gone through step 1 to 7 and are happy with your selections please make sure you click on the SAVE tab at the bottom of the page 🙂

And that is our walk through your Advisory Setting :).

Of course if you are still unable to do this yourself, you are always welcome to contact your Account Executive or call Head Office for assistance:).

I hope you found this helpful, if so, please look out for our next edition of DYK 🙂

Our Online history…. and so much more #whatacompany

1466583634311

This blog has got me so nervous and excited all at once, which in my experience is usually the start to something magical…. so lets see if I can pull this off!

To be perfectly honest, there is no way I can truly bring to life exactly how Leads 2 Business came about, but I will tell you this, this story has the makings of a great movie!  A little bit of rags 2 riches, some deviant play, hard work and reward and even a little romance in the form of a persistent wife who was adamant to buy her dream house, which in turn, turned out to be the step that took a “two man band” company to a company with over 80 happy employees:) …… woman really do always know best, you see:)

So what started as a dream back in 1998/1999 for two friends wanting to give “online” access to a Directory (“Find a Business” astutely named) for all and for free, relying only on advertising in a time when the INTERNET was still something most people had only heard about, soon turned in to a realisation that this was gonna take a lot of time and dime with very little reward…..

Now don’t get me wrong, this is NOT a story of failed attempts and umpteen restarts….on the contrary, this is a story of evolution!!!

Being previously in the Construction Industry, it wasn’t a far stretch for Mr Victor Terblanche – Founder & Chief Cook and Bottle Washer, and by that I’m referring to the fact that he was doing all his own programming, developing, sales and marketing at the time, well anyway, they decided to reach out to the construction industry – converting BoQ’s….. yes, that’s where it all really started –

1 2 3 Contracting, services including selling of Internet services and Fax Services lol!

As long as you are solving a problem you will never go hungry And that’s what they did, they solved problems!

They went on to identify the need for easily accessible tender notices – and Daily Tenders was born, with Private Projects and Price Assist Life (PAL) which is now our L2Q service right behind!

But lets just picture this for a minute, you now have an “online” business you need to convince your clients to subscribe to, but first you need to convince them to get “The Internet” first.

At this stage most businesses didn’t even have an email address, meaning the only way to get brochures to anyone was to do it the old fashioned –

Lick-Stick-Snail-Mail-Way …… this is what I call pure determination right there!

The Companies First Ever Brochure.

Screenshot from 2016-06-22 09-05-04

With some cunning maneuvers, crafty investigation, pure wit and I’m sure some brawn to endure the late nights and many trips to Johannesburg, Victor and his small team convinced the construction industry and some key players into believing in this site, some of whom are still subscribed to us today!

4 people strong at that time (if my scribbles from the “interview” I had with Victor serve me correctly)…. all working in a sloped floored garage, weathering the rain with towels and strategically high placed computer boxes and cables, the struggle was real!

And what most people don’t know, while this was all happening, someone else was discovering a dream….. Victor’s wife… she had a dream for a bigger better home!  and without going into all the details, let me just say that because of one woman’s persuasive ways, this little garage company was enabled the cash injection it needed to get to where it is today!…. Leads 2 Business incorporating,
Daily Tenders, Private Projects and a Pricing Platform like no other, L2Q!

So now that you have a little back ground let me show you just how this site and company has evolved visually and technically.

First to go was the 1 2 3 Constructing website.

Screen Shot 2016-06-21 at 9.05.24 AM

And so the evolution of Leads 2 Business started to take place!

This is one of the company’s very first Daily Advisories way back in 2003.

2008 we saw a logo change:

2009 was somewhat of a new look once again.

And the 2009 brochure was our first offer to our clients: the ability to choose their own Daily Advisory filters.

2010, this was a good year in particular for me, it was when I got to join this ever progressive Company:) Screen Shot 2016-06-21 at 9.05.24 AM

It was only two short years later on 23 March 2012 to be exact…. when we ditched our comfortable “Yellow Site”  and were thrown head first, with very little warning, (some kicking and screaming I might add) but ultimately SAFELY into what is now the current site we have all come to know, and love…..

Screenshot from 2016-06-21 14-24-47

But…. if I can give you any advice, never get too comfortable with Leads 2 Business, it is ever evolving & change is always inevitable, and this year is no exception as we stand on the brink of another HUGE & exciting upgrade to our website.

Now believe me, when I heard this, the mere thought sent cold shivers down my spine, made my blood run cold and ……..I even glimpsed at the door, purely out of fear of course ;)….. but then I remembered,

That without change, there is no growth…. and that’s what I am here for, and I’m sure you are here for that too, and when you stick with L2b you are guaranteed to be taken with on their revolutionary train of discovery in the Online industry!

Competitors have come and gone, brochures have changed as well as our site but one thing is certain, Victor Terblanche’s early vision to “solve your problem” has never changed and now runs through us all at Leads 2 Business 🙂

And so in closing I would like to express the privilege it is not only to work for this company, but to work for this man:)

This Blog has really been a pleasure to write and I got to find out what I’m really a part of,  and I was right…. it is pretty magical:).

Which Municipalities Produce the Top Tenders in KZN? (Segment Volume, Award Info & ease of Contact)….. AKA WHO’S the Coolest!

No offense to the person who comes up with these blog topics – “But who comes up with this stuff?!!!”

I think I may have nodded off between the words “Municipalities” and “ease” but luckily for you I am a master of skim reading, so what I took from this topic is, they want me to tell you who is the best in the land! (KZN)…

so that is what I’m gonna give you:)

Buckle up, this should be riveting!!!

Let’s begin by giving you a comprehensive list of  the District and Local Municipalities in KZN –  (Knock yourself out!)

OK so what I thought I would do is start by throwing them all into a pit – a dog fight if you must and see who are the “Big Spenders”

Criteria: Developments R100 Million + and from stages of Conceptual through to Underway. (Information compiled from Leads 2 Business)

break-up-dog-fight-679x483

Lets do this!

Conceptual – Procedural:  And straight out the gate well we have some contenders!

Technology Hub Pietermaritzburg Airport – Msunduzi Local Municipality (Pietermaritzburg)

New Central Library in Durban – eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Durban)
Ok….so far we have a tie but I’m not worried yet, its still very early in the game…..Next is…..
Design:
Right of Way from the Piesang River to Malandela Intersection – eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Durban)
Msunduzi Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network IRPTN – Msunduzi Local Municipality (Pietermaritzburg)
I’m sensing a pattern here…..
Tender:
Moses Mabhida Road Upgrade Km 88 to 103 – Msunduzi Local Municipality (Pietermaritzburg)
And finally someone takes the lead!! – Way-to-Go PMB!
emot1
Awarded: And it looks like we have some new contenders!! Welcome Ixopo & Escort !!!!
Buhlebethu Community Housing – Ubuhlebezwe Local Municipality (Ixopo)
Jika Joe LowCost Development Infrastructure – Msunduzi Local Municipality (Pietermaritzburg)
Paapkuilsfontein Housing Stages 1 2 and 3 Infrastructure – Umtshezi Local Municipality (Escort)
And then our last category but most definitely not the least and where I suspect the “Big Spender” will be revealed…
Underway:
Usuthu Water Purification Plant – Zululand District Municipality (Ulundi)
Hilton Water Reticulation Replacement – Umgungundlovu District Municipality (Hilton)
City Fleet Redevelopment Phase 1 – eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Durban)
Right of Way from Bridge City to Proposed Bus Depot – eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Durban)
Ntuzuma D Phase 2 and 3 Housing Project – eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Durban)
Right of Way Lanes in Anderson Road – eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Durban)
Right of Way Lanes in Beviss Road Qashana Khuzwayo Road – eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Durban)
Right of Way along MR577 Inanda Malandela Intersection to Umgeni Viaduct – eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Durban)
Right of Way lane Along MR577 M25 to InandaMalandela Intersection – eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Durban)
Western Aqueduct – eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Durban)
Whoop! Whoop! to our Big Spender eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Durban)!!!
big spender
Ok so that’s settled, but let’s not count out the rest of the province just yet, let’s lower the bar a little and open the “ring” as it were and find out who exactly is putting out volume in terms of tenders…..
(Please be advised that these figures are ever changing and are taken from the day I composed this blog post and not necessary the moment you read it 😉 also I took this information from the Leads 2 Business website, which is focused on the Construction and related industries – for the current up to date figures, feel free to subscribe to Leads 2 Business http://www.L2B.co.za )

Criteria: Number of Live Tenders in each region

And the results are:
eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Durban) – 30
Okhahlamba Municipality (Bergville) – 18
uMzimkhulu Municipality (uMzimkhulu) – 9
uThungulu District Municipality (Richards Bay) – 8
uBuhlebezwe Municipality (Ixopo) – 7
uMhlabuyalingana Municipality (Kwangwanase) – 5
Nquthu Municipality (Nquthu) – 5
uMngeni Municipality (Howick) – 4
Zululand District Municipality (Ulundi) – 4
Hibiscus Coast Local Municipality (Port Shepstone) – 4
Emnambithi / Ladysmith Municipality (Ladysmith) – 4
Richmond Municipality (Richmond) – 3
The Msunduzi Municipality (Pietermaritzburg) – 2
Dannhauser Local Municipality (Dannhauser) – 2
Umgungundlovu District Municipality (Hilton) – 2
Nongoma Local Municipality (Nongama) – 2
uPhongolo Local Municipality (Pongola) – 2
Jozini Municipality (Jozini) – 2
Ndwedwe Local Municipality (Stanger) – 1
Mkhambathini Municipality (Camperdown) – 1
Ntambanana Municipality (Empangeni) – 1
Mtubatuba Municipality (Mtubatuba) – 1
Maphumulo Local Municipality (Maphumulo) – 1
Big 5 False Bay Municipality (Hluhluwe) – 1
Newcastle Municipality (New Castle) – 1
Mandeni Municipality (Mandeni) – 1
Endumeni Municipality (Dundee) – 1
So there we have it folks, no big surprise with the 1st place winner eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Durban) considering it is the largest of all the Municipalities, but the number two spot I was sure would go to The Msunduzi Municipality (Pietermaritzburg), but no, this went to the little town of Bergville!!! Well Done Bergville!
Now lets get down to the nitty-gritty – ease of contact…..frustration
I’m not sure how many of you have had the pleasure of trying to call a Municipality…..but let me tell you, this can truly be the most frustrating exercise you will ever do…sober!
You either get cut off during transfer, left on hold for days or have the endless ringing, which you hold onto with every last strand of hope that someone, just anyone will pick that ringing phone up and put you out of your misery…. but no, you generally have to, just HAVE to, eventually take a toilet break, coffee break or just simply wash your now sticky sweaty phone holding hand!!!
And when you are back, it all starts again……150-dpi-2008-vera-on-the-verge-009
Now that I have explained how I feel about this, let me tell you that in the name of good “Journalism” I will take on the task and I will report back on each of the Local Municipalities, I will start by clicking though to their websites and see if those work, then I will call the prescribed contact numbers and see if those work and if so, how long does it take them to answer my call!

 21-comics-that-capture-the-frustrations-of-depres-1-8251-1443638180-6_bigAnd I’m Done!!!
Now just so you know, I only called the switchboard of each of these and I didn’t try connecting with anyone in Procurement #NotCrazy, so the numbers look a little better than what I’m sure you were expecting after my earlier “rant”, however I would like to add that anything after 10seconds is far too long!
But after all is said and done, I realise I can no longer generalise about the efficiency of the Municipalities in KZN, there were some clear “Ball Droppers” during this exercise and, well, the rest weren’t all that bad:)
So there are the facts people – I personally find it hard to pit these guys up against each other over procurement as such, purely because of the vast differences in size of their regions etc. but I gave it a good shot;)
Where I think the real measure would be found, is in their capabilities in terms of service delivery……hmmmmmmm
But that’s another topic for another day!
So, until next time 😉

Be your own “Light-saver”

bright_side

It’s no secret that I am an eternal optimist, a glass-half-full kinda girl if you will, and I prefer to live my life that way…. but damn!!! ALL this negativity about Electricity and Water Shortage in our country is killing my vibe!

We need to turn this around!

I refuse to believe that we, the little people can’t do something to assist this situation!!!

So…….. Is there more you could be doing at home to be your own “Light Saver”? – I’m glad you asked!  Of Course there is!!!

Now when I read these out to you, you probably gonna go “Duh Sherina! we know all of these!!!”…… Well that’s awesomeemot1 ….are you actually doing any of them?…..

ye I didn’t think so emot2…. so let’s get started shall we!

  • Turn your geyser temperature down to 60o Celsius – You can bath/shower quite comfortably at this temperature, and it’s cheaper to maintain than the standard 70o Celsius.

This is an easy one – In most cases, the thermostat is located in the little cover over the electrical element of the geyser. Switch off the electricity circuit at the mains, undo the cover, and then turn down the thermostat using a screw driver. Or hire a plumber to help you 😉

  • Cut down on the amount of hot water you use.
  1. Shower instead of bath (If possible) – I’m personally not fussy as long as you get one of those done every day!…. but if showering saves electricity and water then that’s what I’m all for!
  2. Don’t wash your dishes under a running tap….. guilty Guilty!… I do this all the time, but I will make a concerted effort to allow enough dishes to accumulate (yuck!) before I run a full sink and do them all one shot!
  3. If you have your hot water tap connected to your washing machine – TURN that OFF RIGHT NOW!!! (my-face-with-no-electricty_admin100114ivkbkit’s totes not necessary)

  • Switch off equipment when its not in use – Turn appliances off at the wall plug, rather than leaving them on standby as this can still draw about 20% or more of normal electricity use. (Examples are TVs, music systems, computers, phone chargers etc.) Also turn the geyser off when you go on holiday!!!

  • Be Kitchen Conscience, (wow, that really isn’t easy to say…..try it ….out loud!)
  1. Thaw your meat in the fridge/outside to reduce the use of microwaves and cooking time.
  2. Make sure your fridge seals 100%, and a good temperature to keep it on would be around 4 or 5 degrees Celsius.
  3. When you are cooking, use the microwave when you can – it uses much less energy than an electric oven. If you use the stove, keep lids on your pots to reduce cooking time.

  • Air Dry your Clothes! Laziness is not a disability – go outside and hang your clothes, the fresh air will do you good, and look, you are now saving money too!

  • Use energy-efficient light globes – This is a no-brainer!

    • They typically use about 25%-80% less energy than traditional incandescent light bulbs.
    • They can last 3-25 times longer.

There are a few other investment upgrades (all under R1000) you could make to your home to make your electricity bill go down, such as:  funny-quotes-quotes-a-day-35

  • Install an efficient shower head.
  • Insulate the ceiling/roof
  • Insulate the geyser
  • Install a solar water heater System

When you are not living alone, most of these efforts are pretty much lost unless you are working together towards a common goal – so have “The Talk” – discuss with your partners, kids, family, friends, whoever is residing with you, the effects of our wastage and come up with ways you can save together:)

OK, so now we saving at home people!! How about at work?…… are your companies doing anything to help the electricity crisis?

If not – let’s show them how! emot3

Now I understand that every company has different needs, so there isn’t a one fit, fits all, but there is always something that can be done. perm

#EternalOptimist remember lol!

  • Use florescent lighting.tickCheck
  • Minimize the use of the air conditioner. On warm days opt to opening windows and blinds.tick  Check
  • Boil the kettle for groups instead of filling, boiling and pouring for one. tickCheck
  • Cut down on your printing – print double sided if possible. tickCheck
  • Turn off electronics at the end of the day.tickCheck

So how is your company doing?…. Lets keep going!

The next two tips will cost the Company money initially but will save them in the long run.

  • When your company is upgrading their PC’s, suggest they switch to laptops, these use way less electricity than desktops.
  • Move IT to the Cloud – Consider getting rid of your computer servers, and instead going with cloud-based systems. No more running multiple servers or cooling of that hot data center is needed. On top of that, more employees could telecommute. According to one survey in 2010, a small business with 100 users could cut its carbon footprint and energy costs by 90% by moving to the cloud.

That’s all I have on Electricity but I’m on a roll now so I’m just gonna keep going and throw out some water saving tips too, if you don’t mind!2016-04-15 10.20.02

  • Turn off your water when brushing your teeth.
  • Fix all water leaks in your home.
  • Put a brick in your toilet cistern.
  • Run your water over flow pipe into your garden for irrigation

and lastly…

  • Shower with your partner! emot3You’re welcome!

I thought I would end with some weird and wonderful facts about Electricity:

  • One bolt of lightning has enough electricity to supply 200 000 average size homes!
  • A refrigerator uses less energy than a Playstation 3.
  • It is a little known fact that only ten percent of the traditional light bulb is used for actual lighting. The other 90% of the energy creates heat.
  • During a hurricane, 50 to 200 trillion watts of heat energy are released. This is the same amount of energy as a 10 megaton nuclear bomb exploding every 20 minutes.
  • South Africa was the country with the cheapest electricity in the developed world. That was until the staggering 27.8% tariff increase. According to the Electricity Report & Pricing Survey, Canada is now the cheapest in the world, with South Africa following in second place with a 7% higher electricity tariff than Canada. Italy and Germany on the other have, has the most expensive electricity rates in the world.
  • In 1994 only 12,000 schools had electricity, in 2015, approximately 25,000 have access to electricity.
  • The percentage of the South African population with access to clean drinking water has increased from 62% in 1994, to 94% in 2013. Access to electricity has increased from 34% in 1994, to 88% in 2012.
  • Have you ever wondered why birds sitting on a power line don’t get electrocuted? If a bird sits on just one power line it is safe. However, if the bird touches another line with a wing or a foot, it creates a circuit, causing the electricity to flow through the bird’s body. This results in electrocution.

So, lets see if we can all try

unplug_page_logo1A little …..

Until next time 😉
