Featured Project: Pinnacle Towers, Nairobi – Hilton Hotel

Description: Construction of a commercial building tower on Land Title No. Nairobi/ Block 31/219 at the junction of Upper Hill Road and Haile Selassie Avenue in Nairobi, Kenya. The project plot area measures about 1.002 ha. The project entails construction up a multiple use premise (45-storey building) that will comprise of two towers; one tower of approximately 212.40 meters (696.9 feet) high and another one of about 137.40 metres (450.8 feet) high and associated facilities like parking bays occupying the middle ground. The plot preferred for the development has an area of about 2.5 acres. The design for the commercial building tower provides for the construction of four components; a commercial component of about 30 000m² of total floor area, a residential component of about 10 000m² of total floor area, a hotel of about 15 000m² of total floor area and a retail component of maximum 15 000m². The hotel will be The Hilton Nairobi Upper Hill and the larger mixed-use development, which will include a residential, retail and entertainment complex, as well as an adjacent office tower, will be Africa’s tallest building, standing at 330m. Hilton Nairobi Upper Hill will comprise of an executive lounge and five food and beverage outlets, including a relaxing poolside bar, speciality smokehouse and grill restaurant, lobby dining area with landscaped deck and a boutique rooftop bar with unbeatable vista views of the Nairobi skyline on the 43rd level. The 255 guest-room hotel will be located in the shorter of the twin towers while the taller arm will be an office block. Estimated project value: US$ 194m.

Notes: The 70-floor mixed-use twin tower development, called the Pinnacle Towers in Nairobi’s Upperhill area and will cost a whopping US$ 194m. It will encompass a 45-floor Hilton hoteland at 900 feet; the building will have the highest viewing deck in Africa. There will also be 200 residential houses ran by Hilton Hotel that will include one bedroom, two bedrooms, and three bedroom fully furnished luxury apartments. To this point, the developers have spent US$ 14m in the construction of the foundation and preparation stage. The development is projected to be complete by December 2019, although the 255-room hotel may be completed earlier.

Featured Project: WellCity, Togo – Shopping Mall

Description: Construction of a shopping mall and parking bays, as part of a mixed-use development in Lome, Togo known as WellCity. The new town is located north of the Greater Lomé National No. 1, Lome-Dapaong, 15 kilometres from the city center. Over 1 000 new villas and apartments are to be constructed. Included in this development will be a shopping mall, hotel, school and a clinic. The proposed development covers an area of 100 hectares connected by an expressway a mile to the National # 1. It is close to the new Police Academy and the new dry port development.

Featured Project: Radisson Blu Beach Resort, Cape Verde – Hotel

Description: Construction of a five-star hotel for a new Radisson Blu Beach Resort Hotel located in Santa Maria, Cape Verde. The five-star beach resort designed with a modern minimalistic design will have 240 guest rooms, two restaurants, four bars including a roof top, wellness spa and an iconic swimming pool design with various pools and lounges leading onto a white sandy beach and ocean. The beach resort will offer the largest conference centre in Cape Verde islands with more than 1500 meters of dedicated meeting and event space.

Description: Construction of residential apartments as part of Phase 2 for a mixed-use development in Rwanda. The proposed development is set on a prime 158 hectare tract of land in Gaculiro, Kinyinya Sector of Gasabo district, this high-end estate is adjacent to RSSB constructed Vision 2020 Estate and approximately 3 km from the proposed Central Business District (CBD) at Muhima and 6 km from Kigali International Airport. It will consist of over 4 500 units in different configurations ranging from luxury villas to apartments to be built in 4 phases over 8 years.

Featured Project: New City, Egypt – Shopping Mall

Description: Construction of shopping malls for a new city near Cairo in Egypt. Eagle Hill is planning to invest US$80 billion in the construction of this city that will become the country’s new capital. The new city is meant for the low and middle income earners and will include an airport, shopping mall, hotels and amenities such as schools and hospitals as well as providing homes to low and middle-income buyers. The new city is still to be named and will be built near the Suez Canal.

Notes: A project by Chinese state companies to help build a new capital for Egypt is back on track after running aground earlier this year in a dispute over contract terms. The Egyptian investment and housing ministries have begun talks to finalize an agreement with Shanghai-listed developer China Fortune Land Development under which the company is to invest up to $20 billion to build an upmarket residential district, an industrial zone, schools, a university and recreational centers in the new capital. the final agreement could be reached by year-end, with construction beginning the following month. Local Egyptian contractors have commenced on construction of Phase 1.

Featured Project: Grand Renaissance Dam Hydropower Project, Ethiopia

Description: The Grand Renaissance Dam hydropower project is located on the Abay River in the Beneshangul Gumuz region in Ethiopia envisages a plant with an installed capactity of 6000MW that will supply 15 693GWh/y. The major components of the project include: a 145m high roller-compacted concrete dam with a 1780m long crest; a saddle dam, 4800m long and 45m high; two outdoor powerhouses of 3750MW and 2250MW installed capacity each with a capacity of 375mW and a 500kV switchyard which will transmit power from the power houses to the grid.Construction of 123km access roads, camps, workshops and other civils works are also planned as part of the project. GPS Co-ordinates : 11°12′51″N 35°05′35″E Estimated project value $4.8 billion.

Notes: The construction of the 6,000-megawatt, US$5 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) that began nearly seven years ago, is now close to completion. By the end of this year, the dam, which sits on the Blue Nile near the border of Ethiopia and Sudan, will begin generating electricity.

Description: Construction of a five-star hotel as part of the Zanzibar Amber Golf Resort in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The resort is to be built in the north east of Zanzibar in Unguja.The mega resort will comprise 5, five-star hotels, an equestrian centre, a private jet airport that will have a 3 000m runway, an international school and modern medical facilities that will serve all the customers. Electricity between 25 and 30 MW will be generated at gas and wind energy plants that are set to be built near the resort. Estimated project value US$1 billion

Featured Project: Nokeng Fluorspar Mine

Description: Development of the proposed Nokeng fluorspar mine in the Gauteng Province. Sephaku plans to develop the Nokeng mine, immediately south of the Vergenoeg mine, to produce on average 130 000 t/y acid grade fluorspar. The mine complex will comprise an open cast mining operation, concentrator plant, tailings disposal facility (TDF) and associated infrastructure and services. The initial capital expenditure required for the Nokeng mine was estimated at R1.7 billion

Notes: A joint venture comprising DRA Projects and Group 5 Construction has been awarded the EPC contract for the mine, which includes the concentrator, access roads and the “selfbuild” portion of a power supply agreement concluded with Eskom. Construction is expected to be concluded within 21 months, with commissioning in November 2018 and first production in January or February 2019.
