Mining in Africa has a long history. For over 2000 years iron ore and other metals have been mined in North Africa. Iron mining began in sub-Saharan Africa around 500 BC and had spread throughout the region by 200 AD.
The African continent is home to plentiful natural resources including diamonds, cobalt, oil, natural gas, copper, and gold among others.
Some examples of African countries that are rich in minerals are:
Around 55% of the world’s diamonds are led by Botswana and Congo
Africa produces about 483 tons of gold which equate to 22% of the world’s total production
60% of mining in Africa is Gold Mining.
Africa hosts 30% of the world’s mineral reserve.
South Deep gold mine is the largest gold mine in the world, by reserves. Located 45km south-west of Johannesburg in the Witwatersrand Basin, South Africa, South Deep is also the seventh deepest mine in the world, with a mine depth up to 2,998m below the surface.
The Mponeng Mine located south-west of Johannesburg in South Africa is currently the deepest pit in the world.
Botswana heads Africa’s list of diamond miners, housing seven well-established mines including Jwaneng, the world’s richest in terms of value, Orapa, the world’s largest by area, along with Karowe and Letlhakane.
Ghana has cemented its position as Africa’s largest gold producer after increasing its industrial gold output by 6% in 2019.
The Big Hole in Kimberley is considered one of the deepest cavities excavated by man. From mid-July 1871 to 1914, 50,000 miners dug the now famous Big Hole (then called the Kimberley Mine) in Kimberley with picks and shovels yielding 2 722 kilograms of diamonds. The hole has a surface of 17 hectares (42 acres) and is 463 meters wide. It was excavated to a depth of 240 meters, but then partially infilled with debris reducing its depth to about 215 m. Since then it has accumulated water to a depth of 40 meters, leaving only 175 meters visible.
The word “Diamond” comes from the Greek word “Adamas” and means “unconquerable and indestructible”
To produce a single one-carat diamond, 250 tonnes of earth needs to be mined
The Cullinan Diamond was the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever found, weighing 3 106.75 carats (621.35 g), discovered at the Premier No.2 mine in Cullinan, South Africa, on 26 January 1905.

The Kamoa-Kakula Copper Project has been independently ranked as the world’s largest, undeveloped, high-grade copper discovery by international mining consultant Wood Mackenzie in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is a very large, near-surface, stratiform copper deposit with adjacent prospective exploration areas within the Central African Copperbelt, approximately 25 kilometres west of the town of Kolwezi and about 270 kilometres west of the provincial capital of Lubumbashi. The prefeasibility study has indicated annual mine production of 3 Mtpa at an average grade of 3.86% copper over a 24-year mine life, resulting in annual copper production of approximately 100,000 tonnes. Initial capital cost, including contingency, is US$1.2 billion.

Mauritius is a small island in the Indian Ocean. The most important revenue in the 1980s was sugar cane being exported to European countries. Nowadays it relies mostly on the tourism sector which is considered its main source of revenue. Tourism has become a source of job creation and revenue for the local inhabitants. A change in the tourism demand for an island may have a major impact on the Gross Domestic Product, the budget and the Balance of Payments.
Sugar cane fields are now being replaced by new projects to cater to the tourism sector. With so many developments in the pipeline for Mauritius, it is hard to pick just five of them. Currently, on the L2B website, we have over 340 projects for Mauritius alone, and that figure is climbing steadily.
Here are some interesting large projects that are currently either in the pipeline or underway in Mauritius:
1) Jin Fei Smart City
The Jin-Fei Smart City will be created over eight years and will require an investment of around US$ 800 million. The first phase includes the construction of the Garden of Eden, which is now complete, as well as the construction of a 5-star hotel with 185 rooms. This hotel project will be carried out in two 60 m high towers. Construction of the hotel has started on a plot of land next to the Place du Jardin d’Eden. In parallel, construction will also start on 19 luxury French-style villas along the Baie du Tombeau river, a clifftop restaurant and an entrepreneur club that will take the form of a boat.
2) Medine Smart City (aka Uniciti)
Medine Group is aspiring to create a smart city which will include not only residential areas, schools, universities, shopping malls, sport and leisure centres but also an art and cultural centre and a botanical garden. With a surface area of 823 acres between Bambous, Cascavelle and Flic en Flac, the project will have a global investment of US $ 937 million once the city is completed.
3) Beau Plan Smart City
Terra Mauricia’s smart city project will be located at Beau Plan on a freehold land of an extent of 540 acres. The proposed smart city project will comprise of residential units, mixed-use development, creative park and university campus development. Existing developments such as the Aventure du Sucre, Beau Plan Business Park, restaurant, leisure facilities amongst others have been included in the smart city. The project will entail a total investment of US$ 800 million and will bring around 10 200 job opportunities.
4) Cap Tamarin Smart City
The Cap Tamarin Smart City Project will be located at the entrance of Tamarin Village and will comprise of an education zone, office spaces, a boutique hotel, residential units, a civic centre and public amenities, including jogging and cycle tracks. The project will cover the land of an extent of 105 acres. The total investment is estimated at US$ 240 million.
5) Mon Tresor Smart City
The Mon Trésor Smart City project is being undertaken by the Omnicane Group and will be a vibrant and sustainable city comprising of a business gateway, offices, logistics/light industrial park, freeport zone, 600 residential lots, 300 villas/duplexes, 100 apartments, commercial centre, leisure complex, SME’s incubator, film studio, civic centre, an education and art hub on freehold land of an extent of 184.1018Ha at Mon Trésor and La Cambuse. The total project cost is estimated at US$ 253.5 million.
Did you know: Mauritius has emerged as Africa’s most competitive economy for 2019 and ranked 25th in the world. South Africa’s economy is ranked 2nd in Africa and 60th in the world for 2019.

The Syama Gold Project is located in the south of Mali, West Africa approximately 30kms from the Côte d’Ivoire border and 300km southeast of the capital Bamako in Mali. A pre-feasibility study into an underground operation at the Syama project has resulted in a 54% increase in the project’s ore reserves. With the addition of some 14.3 million tonnes of underground ore, the Syama ore reserve has grown to 3.15 million ounces, up by 1.1 million ounces on the previous estimate. Underground mine would require a capital investment of $85.6 million.

Safety (noun); the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury.
Safety really should not be complicated. Sometimes taking all the safety precautions can end with injury and in some extreme cases, even death.
Some examples spring to mind…
20 years or so ago, my school friend was travelling from Durban to Pietermaritzburg with her father, and they had an accident. Emergency personnel could not free her from her safety belt, and she ended up being burnt to death.
In some other cases, some people might still be alive if they had their safety belts on, which would have stopped them getting ejected through the windscreen. Buckle up and maybe carry a knife on you just in case you need to free yourself.
Then there are a couple of cases where timber workers, felling trees, end up with the tree falling in the wrong direction, or maybe they were just standing in the wrong place at the wrong time and got hit by it; instant death. Protective clothing and helmets did not help in these cases, but maybe if they had a better knowledge or were more aware of their position, they might still be alive.
Whilst you may have heard of these safety rules before, some do need repeating:
Stay alert and stay alive. The more awake you are, the less likely you will get hurt. I don’t know how many times I have driven on the N3 and seen trucks overturned. Rest when you feel tired. Rather get there alive, than in pieces.
Wear the correct clothing. Protective clothing should fit properly. Wear your protective helmet. You never know when an accident may occur. Be prepared.
Use the right tools. If you need a spanner, use it. Using incorrect equipment is just asking for trouble.
Don’t play pranks. Practical jokes can be dangerous, especially around heavy machinery.
Be tidy. This will reduce hazards. Always put your tools away when you are not using them and keep your floors clean and clutter-free. A slip or fall may just end up being a hospital call.
Do not take chances or shortcuts. Do it right, and do it safely. Short cuts are probably the biggest killer of all. To save a minute or two, you may lose a life.
If you follow all the safety precautions and still end up getting hurt, get first aid immediately. Neglect of an injury could lead to infection, loss of work time and in some cases, permanent injury.
Remember, your safety is your responsibility. If you are in doubt, contact your supervisor or manager for instruction, guidance, or training.
Safety is not complicated, but it is a choice. Choose wisely.
