Why are Bridges Built?

Why are Bridges Built?

I am not much of a Blogger, so let me just “build a bridge” and get over it.

Why do we need or build bridges?
Bridges have been built and used since ancient times, used to carry traffic or humans across an area of obstruction where they are unable to get across.

The benefits of Bridges:
Connecting people, goods and transport
Safety
Reduce traffic and collisions
Easy access (easy passage over obstacles)

The negative impact of Bridges:
Bridges can also be harmful to our environment, can harm trees, cause pollution of our waters, chemicals from vehicles and construction can contaminate the water via precipitation. The construction of bridges can also drastically change the environment and impose serious health issues.

How Bridges have evolved:
From cutting a tree, dragging it into position to serve as a plank, to tying rafts together to form a pontoon, to modern bridges, where you, me and any mode of transport can utilise.

Out with the old and in with the new:

The world’s longest sea crossing: The bridge spans 55km (34 miles) and connects Hong Kong to Macau and the Mainland Chinese City of Zhuhai.

Bridges are beautiful, a masterpiece designed by the hands of architects and art in the eyes of humankind.

Tip of the Day: Build and never burn your bridges

Insurance: Expectation vs. Reality

Insurance: Expectation vs. Reality

That Piece of Paper that helps you:

  1.  Own a home
  2.  Drive a vehicle
  3.  Help cover healthcare costs and legal expenses

The Question I think should be asked is:

Do we fully understand the contract deals, terms?
Truth be told, your broker can never explain EVERYTHING to you and who has the time to read all the fine print? Hence we then make hasty decisions based on our expectations.
Some of us get sold with a just a single telephone call without giving ourselves time to study the facts.

Expectations vs Reality

Our Expectations:

Can be based on a lot:

How well known is the insurance company?
How long has the company been around?
Who uses them?
How often and how well the company trends and advertises themselves.
Positive feedback from existing clients

An individual has the following expectations:

  • A Lump sum pay-out
  • No premium increases
  • Saving
  • Expect the Insurance company to be on your side
  • Get a pay-out even when we know that our premiums have not been constant
  • Inherited pay-outs

The Reality:

Insurance can offer you a second chance, a new beginning and a brighter future if all is correct and in order.

  • There is an insurance that suits you
  • Insurance cover is generally much cheaper when you are younger and healthier
  • You can insure just about anything these days
  • Think about the effects of missing one premium
  • Some Insurance pay-outs are TAXED
  • Insurance is a piece of mind, you rest well knowing you are protected

Accidents and Death are unfortunately inevitable for every home no matter the age, we will all come across unexpected issues in life that would require us to be able to take care of ourselves.

“Gandaganda Matiyo, Gandaganda Matiyo!”

posted in: General 0

“Gandaganda Matiyo, Gandaganda Matiyo!”

A typical child that grew up in a township like myself would remember this rhyme when spotting a Gandaganda.

Okay, today’s blog‘s focus is not only on the Gandaganda (Tractor) but on All Heavy Plant and Machinery or better known as “Heavy Duty Vehicles” i.e. Heavy Trucks, Construction Equipment, Heavy Vehicles and Heavy Hydraulics, (things one would not normally think of if you’re not exposed to the construction industry).

These Machines can be referred to as a Foundation to any building structure from conceptual stages right until completed. I say so because of its involvement in the process from ground works until we see the beauty of the structure. With the growing industrialization of Construction works, the role on site, equipment and machineries is vital in achieving productivity and efficiency. This making the works seem much simpler while reducing the amount of manual labour.

The use of heavy equipment has a long history: The ancient Roman engineer Vitruvius (1st century BCE) gave descriptions of heavy equipment and cranes in ancient Rome. The pile driver was invented around 1500. The first tunneling shield was patented by Marc Isambard Brunel in 1818

From this Gandaganda,

To this.

Heavy equipment is used in different ways and can be divided into four major components:

• Earth – moving Equipment
• Construction Vehicles
• Material Handling
• Construction Equipment

There are several variations of construction equipment, but the ones listed below are the most commonly used by contractors.

1.Excavators

Excavators are large construction equipment that can be available over wheels or tracks.

Functions: Material handling, digging of trenches, holes and foundations, Brush cutting with hydraulic attachments, Demolition, Rough grading, Heavy lifting and pipe installation, Mining and River dredging

2.Backhoe Loaders

Backhoe loaders are very similar to tractors with a slight difference: They contain an adjustable shovel in front and a small bucket at the back used for digging.

Function: They can move dirt, backfill, dig trenches and place smaller pipes into place. One of the best attributes of backhoe loaders is that they are tyre mounted and they can be used in urbanized areas and patios. The bucket in the back can be modified using different attachments allowing you to dig trenches of different widths.

3.Bulldozers

Bulldozers have a wide flat blade in front that can be operated using two hydraulic pistons allowing the blade to be moved in limited angles or depths

Function: They are normally used to push piles of earth and for rough/fine grading depending on the size of the bulldozer. Its weight can be used to crush larger boulders among other actions.

4.Asphalt Paver

Asphalt Paver is a piece of construction equipment used to lay asphalt on roads, bridges, parking lots and other such places.

Function: It lays the asphalt flat and provides minor compaction before it is compacted by a roller.

Now when you see a Gandaganda, or such machines as mentioned above, respect them and the people sitting behind them, as the world is a beautiful place because of their existence!!

“Gandaganda Matiyo,Gandaganda Matiyo!”
